The Martian soared to new heights this past weekend as it opened as October’s second-highest opening ever with $54.3 million, just shy of Gravity’s $55.8 million record.  (Deadline)

Lionsgate picked up the film rights for Patrick Rothbuss’s book fantasy series The Kingkiller Chronicle. (The Wrap)

[Edit 10/8: Officially confirmed.] F. Gary Gray is the frontrunner to direct Furious 8. He’s also in consideration to direct Marvel’s Black Panther. He’s best known for Straight Outta Compton, Friday and 2004’s The Italian Job. (Variety)

Katniss Everdeen rallies all the districts together to turn against President Snow as seen in this final Mockingjay: Part 2 trailer.  (Entertainment Weekly)

In October 2015, Marty McFly went to go see Jaws 19 at the Holomax Theater in Hill Valley. In celebration of Back to the Future Part II’s 30th anniversary, Universal has released the trailer for the film and catches us up on the myriad of Jaws sequels we’ve missed. (YouTube)

Pepsi’s is also commemorating the anniversary by releasing Biff’s favorite drink, the vitamin-enriched Pepsi Perfect. The 6,500 limited-edition bottles will be sold online starting October 21st – the exact day Marty arrived in Hill Valley. (A.V. Club)

After a long casting search, Disney has found their Princess Moana.  (Vulture)

The second trailer for The Good Dinosaur has been released, and we get a better glimpse of the bond between Arlo the dinosaur and the young boy Spot.  (Yahoo! Movies)

Optimus Prime will soon be returning to the big screen as Hasbro Studios announces four more installments of the Transformers franchise. No word yet on if Michael Bay will be in the director’s chair.  (CNN)
