Mila Jovovich in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

A major Split occurred at the box office this past weekend, as the M. Night Shyamalan film exceeded expectations with a #1 debut at $40.2 million.  xXx: The Return of Xander Cage landed in second place with $20 million. (Los Angeles Times)

The nominations for the 89th Annual Academy Awards were announced! La La Land leads the pack with 14 nominations, tying the record for the most Oscar nominations with the formidable films Titanic and All About Eve. Best Picture nominees Moonlight and Arrival nabbed the second place spot with nine nominations each.

As Hollywood celebrated its Oscar nominations, it was also time for the scourge of the industry to tout the “best of the worst.”  The Golden Raspberry Awards, or The Razzies, announced the nominees for their 37th annual awards on Monday. Leading the way with 9 Razzies is Zoolander 2, followed closely behind by Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice with 8 Razzies. Imagine that you are quietly shopping in an electronics store, minding your own business, when girl comes creeping out of a TV! Real-life shoppers got the fright of their lives thanks to a terrifying studio marketing campaign for the upcoming Paramount horror flick Rings. The Today show anchors were a little freaked out as well! (Entertainment Weekly)

After months of anticipation, Disney and LucasFilm reveal the official title of Episode VIII – Star Wars: The Last Jedi. (Variety)

Chevy’s ad campaign “Real People, Not Actors” got an adorable remake thanks to a special studio tie-in partnership with Warner Bros.’ The LEGO Batman Movie.  The spoof 60 second ad shows a LEGO focus group discussing the pros and cons of the newest Chevy LEGO Batmobile, and of course LEGO Batman is a big fan. Warner Bros. dropped the second trailer for Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur:  Legend of the Sword.  In addition, the studio also announced a joint collaboration with Snapchat to release a sponsored interactive puzzle-game selfie lens. (Deadline and Variety)

A new trailer and images for the now Rated-R final installment of Logan shows Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) back in action while protecting a young mutant named Laura (Dafne Keen). (/Film)

Mike Dougherty has been tapped to direct Godzilla 2. (Cinema Blend)

There has been some major casting buzz lately — here’s a quick look:

  • Will Smith and Tom Hanks both are in early talks to star in Tim Burton live-action Disney adaptation of Dumbo. (Variety)
  • James Cordon and Berlin Station’s Richard Armitage officially signed on to become part of Ocean’s Eight. (Entertainment Weekly and Deadline)
  • Disney is eyeing Anna Kendrick to star in a new film Nicole – a tale about a female Santa Claus. (The Hollywood Reporter)
  • Peter Dinklage may potentially join Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Avengers: Infinity War in an unspecified role. (Deadline)
  • The upcoming Han Solo spinoff has added a new name to its cast – Woody Harrelson. (Los Angeles Times)

During a recent panel discussion, Tom Hardy reveals big news that an impending sequel to the Mad Max franchise has been greenlighted. (Collider)

Based on the 1970s TV cop comedy CHIPs, the movie adaptation stars Dax Shepard and Michael Pena as two California police officers going undercover in the California Highway Patrol to investigate and dismantle a corrupted law enforcement individual. (The Wrap)
