Moviegoers have their pick of great movies at the Christmas box office this year. This week’s hot movie releases include an animated film starring Will Smith and Tom Holland, Spies in Disguise; Little Women, a classic post-Civil War drama following four sisters that is expected to bring in over $21 million its debut; and the Golden Globe-nominated epic war film, 1917, set during World War I and available in select cities. The results are in! Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker earned nearly $176 million opening weekend, making it the third best opening in December. The last of the trilogy fell a little short of the first two movies in the Skywalker saga – The Last Jedi brought in $220 million its opening weekend in 2017, while The Force Awakens brought in $247 million in 2015. Uncut Gems starring Adam Sandler crossed the $1 million mark after its second limited weekend. The film is A24’s biggest per-screen average opening ever. After being shown on five screens throughout New York and Los Angeles, Uncut Gems, was released nationwide on Christmas Day. (Deadline)
CATS, the musical turned film that has been causing quite a stir online, will be getting some improvements! During its opening weekend, Universal informed theaters nationwide that there will be an updated version released which will feature “improved visual effects” but not affect the film’s story or its length. The star-studded cast of felines includes Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, Taylor Swift, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba and more. (The Hollywood Reporter) (Digital Spy)
Shea Whigham has been added the Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 roster, joining Pom Klementieff and Hayley Atwell. The films are expected to hit theaters July 23rd, 2021 and August 5th, 2022. (Screenrant)
Samuel L. Jackson, Ryan Reynolds, and Salma Hayek will be back for The Hitman’s Bodyguard 2, which will also feature Antonio Banderas, Morgan Freeman, Frank Grillo and Richard E. Grant, who once again plays Seifert. The new story, bodyguard Michael Bryce’s (Reynolds) plans to swear off violence are derailed when hitman Kincaid (Jackson) and his wife Sonia (Hayek) entangle him in their mission to save Europe from a vengeful zealot (Banderas). Lionsgate and Millennium have announced the sequel will hit theaters August 28th, 2020. (The Hollywood Reporter) (Screenrant)
Christopher Nolan just released the first look at his suspenseful drama, Tenet, which he called the most ambitious film he and producer Emma Thomas have made. Written and directed by Nolan, the international action-packed film stars John David Washington and Robert Pattinson, along with Elizabeth Debicki, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Kenneth Branagh. The film is set to hit theaters July 17th, 2020. (Entertainment Weekly)
Guy Ritchie is returning to his crime and comedy roots with Matthew McConaughey in his latest film, The Gentleman, opening January 24. The new trailer tells the story of McConaughey’s Mickey Pearson, who has created a “highly profitable marijuana empire” in London, but is looking to cash out his business. Spoiler alert – it does not go smoothly. (Cinema Blend)
