This weekend’s upcoming new releases are a mix of action, drama, and a bit of comedy! In Underwater, aquatic researchers are terrorized by mysterious creatures after an undersea earthquake destroys their laboratory. Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne star as cosmetics entrepreneurs whose financially shaky business is targeted for a buyout by beauty tycoon Salma Hayek in Like a Boss. Golden Globe winner 1917 will be released worldwide this weekend, and the new Jamie Foxx drama, Just Mercy, opens in limited release. (LA Times)
History was made at this year’s Golden Globes! The Farewell’s Awkwafina was the first Asian American actress to win in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Frozen 2 is officially the highest grossing animated movie ever! The Disney film has brought in $1.325 billion globally, and was 2019’s third-biggest film, following Disney’s Avengers: The End Game and The Lion King. The film was Disney’s sixth 2019 release to reach $1 billion in ticket sales and “Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker” will soon become its seventh. That’s the most billion-dollar films from a single studio in one year. (Variety)
Searchlight Pictures announced that Timothee Chalamet will play folk rock superstar Bob Dylan in upcoming biopic. James Mangold, who’s also responsible for Ford v Ferrari, is set to direct the film. The movie, Going Electric, will focus on Dylan’s transition from folk to rock, embodied in his controversial decision to perform with an amp at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. (Forward)
Burger King is offering Bronx, NY residents free whoppers to ease the tourist pain of it new attraction – the “Joker stairs.” Since the release of Joker, movie fans have made the infamous stairs a mandatory stop on their trip to NYC, sometimes dressing up in costume, to the chagrin of local residents. The “King Stairs” promotion, in partnership with Uber Eats, continues Burger King’s years-long spree of marketing poking fun at McDonald’s by way of linking the megabrand to anything annoying or creepy about clowns. Residents must enter the code “KINGSTAIRS” in the Uber Eats app to receive their free whopper. (Adweek)
The 31st GLAAD Media Award nominees have been announced! Over 175 nominees across a variety of categories were recognized. In the outstanding film category for wide release, narratives centered on women prevailed, including the shocking truth-based Fox News tale Bombshell, Olivia Wilde’s romp Booksmart, Renee Zellweger’s Judy, Focus Features’ Downton Abbey and Paramount’s Elton John epic Rocketman. Gwyneth Paltrow will “literally never nev-er” return to acting! In her recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Paltrow shared she became burnt out when acting and has no plans on returning to a starring role.
