Let’s talk about the top stories in Hollywood this week!
Joker leads this year’s Oscar nominations with 11 nods, while 1917, Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood and The Irishman are close behind with 10 nominations each. All four of these films also earned Best Picture nominations. Rounding out the Best Picture category is Little Women, Marriage Story, Parasite, Jojo Rabbit and Ford v Ferrari. The 2020 Critics’ Choice Awards, hosted by Taye Diggs, took place this Sunday with Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood taking home major wins. The film’s list of wins include Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt. Other winners include Joaquin Phoenix and Renee Zellweger, who won Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively, for their work in “Joker” and “Judy.” The awards show also presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to Eddie Murphy. The global box office hit a record breaking $42.5 billion in 2019! The National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) reported that the North America box office take was $11.4 billion – the second highest in domestic box office history. NATO President and CEO John Fithian stated, “Through every challenge, through every new technology innovation over the last twenty years, theatrical admissions have been stable and box office has consistently grown.” (The Wrap)
The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, has signed a deal with Disney for an unnamed future project. The deal will include voice-over work in exchange for a donation to the charity, Elephants Without Borders. This news comes shortly after Markle and her husband Prince Harry announced they will be stepping down as senior Royal family members. The deal may have been sparked at the London premiere of The Lion King. In a newly discovered video, Prince Harry is seen pitching his wife’s voice-over skills to Disney CEO Bob Iger at the premiere. Sony Pictures just released the international trailer for its upcoming action film Bloodshot starring Vin Diesel. In the film, Ray Garrison (played by Diesel) is an assassin whose blood is filled with nanobots, which enhances his strength, speed and healing abilities in order to join a group of soldiers led by an unnamed man (Guy Pearce). The comic book adaptation is set to release March 13th. (Hollywood Reporter)
Thor actor Chris Hemsworth, pledged $1 million toward Australia’s ongoing bush fire relief efforts. In a video posted to his Instagram page, the actor encourages his fans to contribute to the relief fund, which will go “directly to the firefighters, the people on the front lines, the people who have suffered, the communities that have taken a hit, and who are in desperate need of our support.” (Screen Rant)
Regal and Pepsi have announced a new partnership that will kick off this spring. PepsiCo’s catalog of beverages including Pepsi Zero, Mountain Dew, LIFEWTR, Pure Leaf, and more will be in all Regal’s theaters nationwide soon. The two companies, who already have a partnership through Frito-Lay snacks, will also join forces for “limited-time product offers” and “entertainment sneak peeks.” (Screen Rant)
