As nationwide social distancing orders continue, movie theater owners are becoming more creative and resourceful by the day:
- Mark O’Meara, who owns two movie theaters in Virginia, has begun selling concessions on the curb of his theater to raise money for his employees. On his first afternoon in business, O’Meara sold $25 worth of popcorn in 45 minutes. He is now averaging $300 to $400 a day in concession sales. (Variety)
- Coral Gables Art Cinema’s co-executive director Brenda Moe decided to take it digital and invite their patrons to “drive in” to watch flicks on the theater’s website. People are visiting the “drive-in” to watch films like Phantom of the Opera and His Girl Friday. (The Hollywood Reporter)
- American Cinematheque, a Los Angeles based nonprofit, recently shared a video taking movie lovers behind the scenes and into a sacred room that the public never gets to see! In the video, chief projectionist Benjamin Tucker walks viewers through the projection room of the world-famous Egyptian Theatre. (TimeOut)
Speaking of social distancing, Samuel L. Jackson told Jimmy Kimmel Live viewers to “Stay The F*** At Home” this week amid the Coronavirus crisis in a hilarious update to his epic reading of Go the F*** to Sleep, a children’s book for adults written by Adam Mansbach and Ricardo Cortés. (Deadline)
British stars Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Kate Winslet, Daniel Craig and Elton John are among the celebrities saluting the U.K.’s National Health Service in a video posted to Twitter by the NHS. (Variety)

Lex Scott Davis and Shamier Anderson will be joining the cast of A Lot of Nothing alongside Davis’ former co-star, Y’lan Noel and Cleopatra Coleman. The Mansa Productions thriller will be actor Mo McRae’s directorial debut and will be executive produced by Emmy and Golden Globe nominee David Oyelowo. A Lot of Nothing follows a married couple living in a Los Angeles suburb who is compelled to take dangerous actions when they discover the police officer that has just murdered an unarmed motorist is their next-door neighbor. Ryan Gosling is heading back to outer space in new adaptation from The Martian author Andy Weir, a book titled Project Hail Mary. Gosling will not only star, but also produce the film which, like The Martian, pivots on a solitary astronaut who’s assigned a critical mission to save the world. MGM scooped up the movie rights for a cool seven figures. (IndieWire)
