Let’s talk about the top stories in Hollywood this week!

With the three-day holiday weekend upon us, movie theaters are eager to reopen and welcome movie lovers back safely. AMC, Cinemark, and Regal are expected to open additional theaters throughout California, Maryland and New Jersey – just in time for the release of Tenet. “The entertainment industry…put together very safe reopening plans,” Maryland’s Gov. Larry Hogan stated at a recent press conference as he announced the theaters can reopen. California has implemented a new categorization system for 58 of their counties to indicate specific reopening guidelines for venues including movie theaters. New Jersey’s Gov. Phil Murphy has allowed theaters to reopen and operate at a 25% capacity or 150 people, whichever is less. Theaters across the U.S. continue to implement the industry’s extensive CinemaSafe measures to help keep moviegoers safe.  (Variety, The Wrap)

Christopher Nolan’s Tenet made its debut overseas this past weekend, generating a major $53 million. The long-awaited sci-fi film, starring John David Washington, will open in theaters this weekend in the U.S., Russia, and China. Even before its global debut, the film had accomplished several box office milestones. Advanced tickets are currently outpacing Nolan’s previous movies; it landed its biggest debut of Nolan’s career in nine smaller markets; and it secured the largest opening for a Hollywood film in Saudi Arabia. Movie fans who were among the first to head back to the theater to catch Tenet say it’s well worth it(Variety, Deadline, Cleveland.com, Buzzfeed)

The New Mutants became the first major studio film to be released during the COVID-19 pandemic last weekend. Opening at $7 million in 2,412 domestic theaters, the film was also the largest debut, with Unhinged following in second place and bringing in an additional $2.6 million in its second weekend at the box office. (/Film)

Bond is back! No Time to Die launched a new trailer as the 007 marketing engine roared back to life this week. In a second explosive trailer — landing some 10 months after the first was unveiled in December 2019 – Daniel Craig’s final stint as the famed vodka-martini fan sees him up to the usual antics, crashing motorbikes over ancient Italian towns, firing machine guns that spring out of his Aston Martin’s headlamps, and discussing the imperative need to once again save the world. The trailer shows more of Rami Malek’s new facially-scarred baddie Safin, reportedly out for “revenge,” and introduces fellow newcomers Ana De Armas — a high-kicking operative in Santiago — and Lashana Lynch as the “new double-o.” (The Hollywood Reporter)

Chadwick Boseman’s life continues to be celebrated following his sudden passing last week. Movie theater chains, including AMC, Cinemark, and Regal, will be playing the film 42 at 740 locations nationwide. In the film, Boseman portrayed the MLB’s first Black ballplayer, Jackie Robinson, who ended racial segregation when he started for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Chadwick Boseman’s high school also revealed they will honor the late actor with a scholarship fund in his name. The Chadwick Boseman Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to one deserving student each year. (Deadline, CNN)

The film version of the award-winning Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen has signed on both Oscar winner Julianne Moore and Oscar-nominee Amy Adams to join the cast. Ben Platt, Kaitlyn Dever and Amandla Stenberg will also be joining Universal’s adaptation. The story follows Evan Hansen, played by Platt, a high-schooler with social anxiety. He unintentionally gets caught up in a lie after the family of a classmate who committed suicide mistakes one of Hansen’s letters for their son’s suicide note. Moore is set to play Heidi Hansen, Evan’s mother, and Adams will play Cynthia Murphy, the mother to the classmate that commits suicide. (Deadline, Variety)

A new Haunted Mansion live-action-movie is currently in the works! The movie will be based on Disney’s 51-year-old Disneyland theme park ride, The Haunted Mansion. The ride was an immediate hit when it debuted in 1969 at California’s Disneyland, where patrons are placed in a “Doom Buggy” riding through a haunted house with dozens of supernatural scares. Disney’s 2003 horror comedy The Haunted Mansion which starred Eddie Murphy was also inspired by this infamous ride. The movie, directed by Rob Minkoff, grossed over $180 million worldwide on a $90 million budget. (Variety)

Lin-Manuel Miranda, Blake Lively, Richard Gere and Diane Keaton are all set to star in the romantic comedy, The Making Of. The film revolves around a pair of married filmmakers, played by Gere and Keaton, and casting actors, portrayed by Lively and Miranda, as their marriage falls apart.The film will premiere at the upcoming Toronto Intl. Film Festival.festival, opening on Sept. 10 for its 45th year with a mixture of in-person events and virtual screenings and will feature movies in drive-in theaters in efforts to practice social distancing. Kelly Marie Tran will make history in her upcoming role in Disney’s animated film Raya and the Last Dragon, becoming the first Southeast Asian actress to lead an animated Disney film — one that is also inspired by Southeast Asia. Disney revealed a new look at the film showing the warrior flanked by her trusty steed Tuk Tuk against the dazzling backdrop of the fictional land of Kumandra. The movie is set to release March 2021 and is one of the first Disney Animation features to be developed from remote locations as a result of the pandemic. (LA Times)

Are you ready to Rumble? Charles Barkley, Chris Eubank, and Bridget Everett are! The trio have joined the voice cast of Paramount Animation’s monster wrestling film, Rumble. They will be joining Will Arnett, Terry Crews and Geraldine Viswanathan in the animated film set to hit theaters January 2021. Written and directed by Hamish Grieve, the film is set in a world where “monster wrestling is a global sport and monsters are superstar athletes.” (Variety)

It was life imitating art as David Blaine recently channeled the 2009 Disney/Pixar film, Up in his latest dare devil stunt! Attached to 52 balloons, the illusionist launched from the ground in Arizona to begin his death-defying stunt, Ascension. As Blaine reached certain levels of altitude, he would be seen releasing weights and various parts of his contraption to aid in the rise. Eventually reaching above, 24,000 feet, he released the balloons all while his loved ones, including his daughter, watched on. (TMZ)
